QUEENS, NY – The UConn women’s soccer team (8-6-3, 4-4-2 BIG EAST) opens the BIG EAST Championship with a quarterfinal matchup against No. 3 St. John’s on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Belson Stadium on the BIG EAST digital network.
The Huskies secured the number 6 seed with an emphatic 4-0 win against Seton Hall on Thursday night. Freshman Chioma Okafor scored her first career hat trip in victory.
UConn is 22nd in the BIG EAST Championship in 23 chances (only missed in 2011). The Huskies are all-time 20-16-5 in the tournament and are looking for a three-game losing streak in the championship with the last win in 2010 against No. 4 Notre Dame. All five tires went to penalties with the Huskies advancing three times. UConn has won two BIG EAST tournament championships (2002, 2004).
This is only the second time the Huskies and Johnnies have faced each other in the BIG EAST Championship, with the Huskies losing 1-0 in the 1994 BIG EAST Semifinal.
Overall, the Huskies are always 18-7-1 against St. John’s, with the Huskies losing 1-0 this year’s previous encounter on September 25 at Belson Stadium.
UConn opens Sunday’s game with a three-game unbeaten streak and registered shutouts in all three games.
The Huskies are led by Jada Konte and Okafor with both forwards leading the team with five goals in the season. Midfielder Abbey Jones leads the team with seven assists.
Kaitlyn Mahoney was part of six shutouts of the season (including three-straight) and did not play in the previous game against St. John’s due to injury.
The winner of Sunday’s match advances to the BIG EAST Semifinals and will face #2 seeded Xavier in Boyds, Md. on Thursday, November 3rd.
