T20 World Cup 2022 – Sri Lanka calls on Asitha Fernando, Matheesha Pathirana and Niroshan Dickwella on standby

The trio has been called up when it is necessary to replace players on their main team. Tim McCaskill, head of the Sri Lanka Cricket High Performance Center, will also travel to Australia with the players.

The decision comes a day after left-arm sailor Binura Fernando, who came on as a replacement for Dilshan Madushanka, suffered a hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s loss to Australia. He could only make five pitches in the game before standing up. Binura is just the latest pacemaker in Sri Lanka to sustain an injury leading up to and during the T20 World Cup. They had lost the fast Madushanka on the left arm to a quad injury before the tournament. Their pace spear Dushmantha Chameera was subsequently banned from the competition after sustaining a laceration to the calf of his left foot during the group stage match against the UAE on October 18.

Seamer Pramod Madushan also suffered an injury and has not played since the game against the UAE, although he has not yet been officially ruled out.

In the hitting division, they were dealt a hamstring injury by Danushka Gunathilaka in the group stage. Ashen Bandara was called up as Gunathilaka’s replacement and he was to play in Sri Lanka’s first Super 12 match against Ireland in place of Pathum Nissanka, who was resting due to a groin injury.

Sri Lanka has so far beaten Ireland and lost to Australia in the Super 12 stage. Their next game is against New Zealand on Saturday in the SCG.
