Sports spotlight – Lincoln Wiseman

BISMARCK, ND (KFYR) – If you’re planning a game against the Mandan soccer team, your defensive coordinator will struggle to contain Mandan’s weapons. Number-21 should be high on the list and that puts Lincon Wiseman in the Sports Spotlight this week.

Todd Sheldon, Mandan Head Coach, “Those first two steps are so explosive.” That’s a good thing for any athlete in any sport, but when you’re talking about a running back, it’s a huge bonus. Lincon Wiseman is Mandan’s main weapon on the ground.

Sheldon: “He’s not just an athlete on the football field. He’s a leader in the locker room, before the game. He is a boy who makes people rally around him in life in general. He has a natural leadership ability.”

There was a time when it looked like Lincon would have to lead from the sidelines.

Lincon Wiseman said: “I had a buckle fracture in my left wrist right after halftime of the Minot game.”

As it turns out, the injury wasn’t as bad as feared.

Wiseman: “It would be six weeks with plaster, but luckily I didn’t have to do that. But thinking that you would have to have surgery to be able to play next week is a blessing in itself.”

Now playing with a splint and padding on his left wrist, his presence is a boon to the Braves’ attack and to the boys up front.

Wiseman said, “They do a lot of my work for me. Without them I couldn’t do what I do. They do a lot of the work to get me out into the open.”

Watching his brother play at St. Mary’s developed Lincon’s passion for football. He adapted his first season with the Saints before returning to his roots in Mandan.

Sheldon said: “He obviously has some athletic talents, but he’s also a kid who wants to learn how to play the position better, so he’s a real student of the game. He made a big leap last year in understanding and knowing what is happening on the pitch.”

In case you haven’t noticed, Lincoln’s first name is not spelled in the conventional way.

Wiseman said: “This month I got Athlete of the Month and they misspelled it on their Instagram post before. I just saw it before so it happens all the time.”

While it may be hard to remember to omit the second L when spelling Lincon, you won’t forget it if it’s your job to tackle it.
