Imphal: Sports can unite people and communities because it has no religion, caste and creed, Manipur chief N. Biren Singh said at the closing ceremony of the 13th Jadonang Memorial Football Tournament held here on Saturday at the Main Stadium, Khuman Lampak. .

“We must pay our respects to our great ancestors who sacrificed their lives for the country and must not forget their selfless sacrifices. Recognizing the courage of Rani Gaidinliu, the Center, under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has commissioned a vessel named Rani Gaidinliu. The state government is making efforts to develop memorial parks in the name of our freedom fighters,” Biren said.

Biren said there is a strong sports movement in the state and said the government is developing Astroturf football fields in Tamenglong, 21 playgrounds in Tamei area, three fields in Oklong, Senapati and others.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Hills Letpao Haokip, Minister of Water Resources Awangbow Newmai, Minister of Social Affairs Heikham Dingo, Chairman of the Hill Areas Committee Dinganglung Gangmei, MLAs Khumukcham Joykishan and Janghemlung Panmei, among others, were present during the function.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister also inspected the construction work of the amusement park in Thenggu Chingjin, Imphal East.

“I look forward to inaugurating the park and handing it over to the public soon. Apart from the daily routine, people need to find time to indulge in some recreational and outdoor activities. Let’s make our society happy and harmonious,” Biren said.
