CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cuyahoga County Executive nominee Chris Ronayne held a meeting Tuesday in Merwin’s Wharf of nearly two dozen current and former Cuyahoga County mayors who supported him, including former Cleveland mayors Mike White and Jane Campbell, in whose administration Ronayne fulfilled various functions.
It would be a challenge for Ronayne’s opponent, Lee Weingart, to hold a similar gathering, outside a cemetery, only because the two most prominent past mayors who are likely to support him have literally passed on—the late Cleveland Mayors Ralph Perk and George Voinovich, RIP
The bipartisan group of 22 suburban mayors who attended the meeting stretched from Bay Village, Brook Park to Bratenahl and Beechwood. Notably absent was Brad Sellers of Warrensville Heights, who was briefly an opponent of Ronayne and Weingart.
Also absent were former Cleveland mayors Frank Jackson and Dennis Kucinich, who had just lost to current Mayor Justin Bibb who was in attendance.
The revival of Cleveland’s long gone mayors, White and Campbell, reminded me not only of Mayors Perk and Voinovich, but I wondered who would be supported by Mayor Tom Johnson and founder Moses Cleaveland, both enshrined in bronze at Public Square?
