No. 19 Men’s Golf falls 4-1 to Pepperdine at No. 25 in East Lake Cup consolation game

ATLANTA, Ga. – The 19th Texas Men’s Golf team dropped a 4-1 decision against Pepperdine 25 on Wednesday afternoon in the East Lake Cup Consolation Game at East Lake Golf Club. Senior Travis Vick took Texas’ only individual win on Wednesday. Vick took a 1-up win against Derek Hitchner.

The eighth annual East Lake Cup featured the four semifinalists from last year’s NCAA Championship, including defending Texas National Champion, runner-up Arizona State, and semifinalists Vanderbilt and Pepperdine.

The East Lake Cup marked the last game of the fall season for the Longhorns. Texas will return to the track during the Southwestern Invitational January 30 through February. 1 (Monday-Wednesday) in Westlake Village, California.

The line up

Senior Mason Nome fell to Ian Maspat by a margin of 1. The two players all squared off and entered the 18th and final hole, where Maspat won the hole to take the individual victory. Sophomore Alejandro Gonzalez dropped a 7&6 decision against Luke Gifford. Freshman Keaton Vo fell to Sam Choi by a margin of 1. Vo had a 1 in 16 hole lead, before Choi won the last two holes to claim the individual victory. Freshman Christiaan Maas dropped a 4&3 decision with William Mouw. Senior Travis Vick took a 1-up win against Derek Hitchner. Hitchner had a 3-up lead on the first eight holes, but Vick answered with consecutive wins on holes 9 and 10 to narrow the margin to 1-up. Hitchner responded with a win on hole 11 to increase his cushion to 2-up, before Vick won three holes in a row (12, 13 and 14) to gain a 1-up advantage. The two players halved the last four holes and Vick finished the 1-up victory.
