Japanese automaker Honda recently confirmed that the 2023 Civic Type R hatch vehicle, the most powerful Honda production vehicle ever sold in the US, is now shipping to dealers. Honda hopes car buyers will be impressed by the Type R, as it is promoted as the “apex” of speed and driving pleasure.

Type R has a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that can produce 315 horsepower with 310 lb-ft of torque. Engine cooling has been improved with a new large diameter fan, larger grille opening and a larger radiator – and the active exhaust can open at higher revs to amplify the engine’s roar.
Drivers can use four different preset performance settings, including: Comfort, Sport, R+ mode and a custom “individual mode”. The car has an EPA MPG rating of 22 cities, 28 highways and 24 combined, Honda confirmed in an announcement earlier this year.
Designed to support a sporty driving experience, the interior features red Type R seats, carpet and upholstery, and an updated aluminum shift knob to operate the six-speed transmission. An updated rev-match system ensures perfectly matched rev-matching when shifting through the gears.
Here’s what Mamadou Diallo, VP Sales at American Honda, had to say: “The all-new 2023 Civic Type R embodies Honda’s challenging spirit, leveraging our deep roots in competition with track-proven technology to deliver exciting performance, both on the road and on the racetrack, it is the perfect culmination of our 11th generation Civic range, the sportiest, most fun to drive Civic in our history.”
Honda has shown great enthusiasm for the 11th generation Civic Hatchback and has ensured that the Type R is packed quickly and comfortably. The hatchback was tested on tracks in Japan, North America and Europe to provide critical performance feedback.
The 2023 Honda Civic Type R is available now with a starting price of $42,895.
