The format of the auto show seems to be losing interest from attendees and presenters alike
Most auto fairs have been at a standstill since the pandemic hit in 2020, but they are slowly starting to bounce back. The Auto Expo is India’s largest auto show and will return in January 2023, after the 2022 edition was postponed. However, it will have even fewer booths than before and many brands are giving the event a pass.
The biggest brand missing from the 2023 Auto Expo is Mahindra, one of the leading homegrown automakers when it comes to producing rugged and lifestyle SUVs. It already showed its vision for an electric line-up at a previous event and will host individual events for the launch of the XUV400 EV and the five-door Thar.
Japanese icon Honda is also missing the upcoming Auto Expo, likely focusing its marketing efforts on the highly anticipated launch of its new mass-market SUV for India later in 2023. We won’t be treated to any of its global models like the Honda e or its cool concepts.
Another surprising absentee is Mercedes-Benz, the most popular luxury car brand in India. It has presented a line of both entry-level and high-performance performance models at previous shows, even when most of the other luxury car brands in India had withdrawn their participation. One of its main rivals, BMW, will also miss the next edition of India’s biggest auto show.
It looks like there will be hardly any German automotive representation during the 2023 edition of the Auto Expo, with the Volkswagen Group also giving a pass. That includes both Skoda and Volkswagen, along with Audi and Porsche.
India’s other major mass-market car conglomerate, the Renault-Nissan Alliance, is also not expected to attend the next Auto Expo. While Nissan would be absent, it is also unlikely that Renault will be present at the show. The collection of cool concept cars from the French brand will certainly be missed.
Other notable brands not attending the 2023 expo include Jeep, Citroen, and Volvo. While the absence of the Swedish brand is somewhat understandable after the big launch of the locally assembled XC40 Recharge, we had hoped for the Stellantis brands to showcase some of their current and future hits.
However, the 2023 Auto Expo will not be full of empty halls. Those attending the event can expect a plethora of displays from brands like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia, Tata, MG and more. Stay tuned to CarDekho for more updates on the Auto Expo 2023.
