Letting body rot for 31 hours thanks to ‘religious conversion’

In an unfortunate incident, an elderly person’s body was left to rot 31 hours after death as villagers refused to allow the relatives of the deceased to perform the final rituals at the village crematorium.

The shocking incident took place in Gulibadana village under Umerkote police boundaries in Nabarangpur district.

According to sources, Jitru Bhatra, an elderly person from Gulibadana village, passed away on Friday. However, tensions ran high in the place after the deceased’s relatives were not allowed to cremate the body at the village crematorium because the deceased reportedly converted to another religion three to four years ago.

Thanks to stubborn villagers, Jitru’s body has been left to rot for 31 hours. District officials and police forces were deployed to maintain order in the village.

The body was moved to another place outside the village after the district officials failed to convince the superstitious villagers.

Umerkote Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Subhechhu Sabar said, “After the intervention of police and district administration, the matter was resolved. The body of the deceased was carried to another place outside the village. The local tehsildar has found a place outside the village where the body will be buried.”

He added: “I must say that the district administration should inform us of such an issue in order to avoid any untoward incident.”
