I’m working hard to expand markets and conservation

Mike Naig is the Republican nominee for Secretary of Agriculture. The incumbent was first elected to office in 2018.

My name is Mike Naig and I have had the privilege of serving the people of Iowa as Secretary of Agriculture since 2018, previously serving as Deputy Secretary under Bill Northey.

I grew up on my family’s century-old ranch in northwest Iowa, which I am still involved in today and have worked in agriculture all my life. My wife, Jaime, and I have three boys, and we spend as much time as possible on the Naig family farm teaching our boys the lessons and values of a generational farm in Iowa. I understand the challenges facing Iowa farmers and our rural communities because I am one of you.

As secretary, my top priority is to make sure we have a productive agriculture and keep it strong. Every Iowan benefits from a strong farming community.

Over the past five years, we’ve made great strides in several key areas that are important to the Iowa farming community and our economy. I’ve focused on building markets for Iowa farmers and Iowa produce, scaling conservation practices that improve water quality and soil health, and making sure the future looks bright for the next generation of Iowans.

But we know there’s still work to be done, and we’re working hard every day to improve

When it comes to expanding markets, we look to do it at all levels; international, domestic and local. We continuously advocate for trade deals with partners around the world, we fight for better access to homegrown biofuels here in the state and across the country, and we build the Choose Iowa program that will increase the visibility of Iowa-grown and -cultivated products such as meat, dairy, fruits and vegetables. More markets for farmers is good for our economy, which is why I will continue to make this a top priority once I am re-elected.

We are also working hard to scale and accelerate state efforts to implement conservation practices that improve water quality and soil health. Iowa is known as the No. 1 producer of corn, pork, eggs and ethanol, but we are also the No. 1 in water quality wetlands, buffer strips, bioreactors and conservation tillage. Our state has a long history of conservation innovation, but we are currently doing more than this state has ever seen. There has never been more involvement, more partners or more resources to do this work than at any time in our state’s history. But we are still not satisfied and will continue to make this important work a primary focus.

We have made a lot of progress in the last five years, but as I said, we know there is more to do. As a farmer, I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get back to work.

I humbly ask for your vote on November 8, so we can keep agriculture strong in Iowa.
