History

CINCINATTI, Ohio – The University of Connecticut women’s volleyball team has beaten Xavier University for their eight straight wins and conference wins. Four different Huskies scored double-digit kills, led by senior Caylee Parker who ended up with 18 kills.

UConn and Xavier were in constant combat from the first serve, with both teams swapping points to avoid long rallies or runs. After a 4-1 run by the Huskies, Xavier would call a timeout trailing 13-10. The Musketeers would regroup and take a 15-14 lead, forcing UConn to time out. After UConn’s timeout, the Huskies would regroup and eventually take the first set in a 25-18 final. Caylee Parker and Allie Garland both finished with five kills in the set.

The second set was a game of runs, as UConn would start the game with a 9-4 lead. Xavier would respond and cut off the UConn to get one. The Huskies would fight back and take a 17-12 lead, forcing a timeout for Xavier. After the timeout, UConn would not look back as they would take the second set with a final score of 25-20. Kennadie Jake-Turner led the Huskies in the second set with five kills, followed by freshman Emma Werkmeister and senior Caylee Parker with four.

Xavier wouldn’t go down without a fight as they would keep fighting to avoid a sweep. The Musketeers would prevent UConn from gaining momentum in the fourth set and would eventually jump to a 14-10 lead and force the Huskies into timeout. UConn would narrow the lead to one, but Xavier would refuse to let the Huskies take the lead as they would take the third set in a 25-21 final.

UConn would start the fourth set by jumping immediately to a 4-1 lead, forcing Xavier to call a timeout. Coming out of timeout, Xavier would narrow the lead to one, but UConn would regroup and jump to an 18-13 lead, forcing another Musketeers timeout. UConn wouldn’t look back as they would win the fourth set by a 25-18 final and the match by a three-set to one final.

Senior Caylee Parker led the way with 18 kills, followed by Allie Garland with 15, Emma Werkmeister with 13 and Kennadie Jake-Turner with 11, while senior Madi Whitmire finished with 53 assists.
