Honda’s compact SUV for India: is this it?

The Japanese multinational car manufacturer Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has been through a period of struggle with several vehicles not getting enough traction in India. The Honda Accord Hybrid, Civic and Jazz will all be discontinued. However, the company is determined to come back, and the Amaze and Honda City sedans are indeed doing well. The next would be a compact SUV in 2023, recently announced by Honda.

Besides Honda, almost every automaker in the country offers an SUV in some segment, be it compact, subcompact, or full-size. However, in an effort to turn things around, it seems that the Japanese automaker has noticed its pain point and is preparing to introduce a few SUVs in the country.

Recently, Honda unveiled the silhouette of a new SUV at the GIIAS (GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show). At first glance, it looks like a subcompact SUV that could be launched in the near future to compete with the industry champions like the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Nexon and Hyundai Venue. Or it could be a larger SUV competing with Skoda Kushaq, VW Taigun, Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. As of now, the company has not announced under which name the new vehicle will be launched.

Some believe the upcoming SUV could be a redesigned Honda WR-V. Others think it could be a successor to the WR-V and be a completely new vehicle. What it will really be is not yet known and we won’t find out until the official launch takes place in the country sometime in mid-2023. Although in speculation about what this model could be, some sources have also claimed that it could be the production version of the RS Concept SUV that was showcased in 2021.

As for the design for this upcoming vehicle, which will make its debut in Indonesia on November 2, we have a few renders from Andra Febrian Design. The artist created these renders based on the silhouette released by Honda and an earlier spy shot of the vehicle. So from the rendering, we can see that the upcoming subcompact SUV will have a grille with lots of chrome trim on the front.

In addition, it gets LED headlights with a DRL strip in the middle. The side profile is straight with few wrinkles and curves. Meanwhile, from the rear, with its straightforward, block-shaped taillights, the vehicle resembles a traditional Honda car. The future vehicle will generally have a fairly sporty, luxurious look thanks to the faux skid plate at the rear.

As the details around this vehicle are very sparse, we don’t know what power unit will be under the hood. Honda could power this upcoming SUV with the company’s trusted 1.2-litre petrol engine or it could also supply the 1.5-litre diesel engine in the vehicle. Although there are also rumors that Honda could stop production of its 1.5-litre diesel engine due to impending pollution regulations. In addition, there are rumors that Honda is developing a new 1.0-liter turbo petrol engine especially for this SUV.
