Honda Pips Hero MotoCorp Becomes Largest Retail Two-Wheeler Manufacturer

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) has picked former retail partner and rival Hero MotoCorp for the month of September 2022. This is the first time in years that Hero, the world’s largest manufacturer of two-wheelers by volume, has lost ground in the two-wheeler business. According to retail sales data released by Vahan, HMSI sold 285,400 units last month, against 251,939 units sold by Hero MotoCorp. The difference between the two manufacturers is 33,461 pieces. Please note that the data on Vahan is constantly updated and 1339 of the 1441 RTOs in the country are missing the vehicle registration data of Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Lakshwadeep and Telangana.

That said, it remains to be seen whether Hero can reverse this trend, once details on Vahan are fully updated for September 2022. Hero MotoCorp has remained the undisputed leader in the Indian two-wheeler space, but sales data from previous months shows Honda is ditching its former partner. gradually catches up. The difference in retail sales between Hero and Honda was over 1.70 lakh in May 2022, falling below lakh in June and around 53,356 units in July. In August of this year, it fell further to 20,658 units.

Meanwhile, Hero MotoCorp shipments for the month of September 2022 also saw a drop in volume. The company’s wholesale figure was 519,980 units, down about two percent year on year. Domestic sales held steady at 507,690 units, while exports fell about 50 percent year-on-year with 12,290 units shipped overseas. In terms of motorcycle sales, the company sold 480,237 units against 489,217 units in September last year. Scooter sales fell by 39,743 units last month, from 40,929 units sold in the same period last year. Honda 2Wheelers India was not yet required to share wholesale data at the time of filing this report. We will update this piece once the company shares its sales figures.
