Faith: Peace in our troubled world comes from the Lord

Peace can be hard to find in our changing, troubled times. Our whole world is changing. There are new world leaders, there are violent wars in parts of the world and there may even be climate change.

Our state is changing. Elections will bring new leaders, the economy will change and there will be changes in the way our state resources are managed. Our community is changing. Our roads are being repaired (positive change), some old businesses are closing, we have a housing problem and our economic base is changing.

Families are constantly changing. New babies are born, children grow up and go to college and move out, people get married and more babies are born, and eventually people retire and enter a new phase of their lives.

Love INC is changing. We are still working at our normal busy pace distributing coats, planning Thanksgiving food packages and fundraising; but even as the seasons change, Love INC looks to bigger changes in the near future as we look for a new Executive Director and adjust our workload to the new person (whoever that may be). Our lives are so unsettled by all these changes that it can be difficult to sleep at night when peace is so elusive.

The Bible guides us through this troubled life and helps us know where to find that elusive peace. Psalm 29:11 says that peace is a gift from God. “The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace” (NIV).

Peace comes from trust in God. Isaiah 26:3 states, “Thou (God) shall keep in perfect peace those whose spirit is steadfast, because they trust in thee” (NIV). Peace comes from knowing God and the redemption He offers through the sacrifice of His Son on the cross, and you don’t even have to fully understand how that works!

“The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:7). So we can see that the Bible makes it clear that peace comes from accepting God’s leadership for us during all the changes in our world.

With all the changes and disruptions we face in our lives, it is vital that we recognize that the world cannot give us the real and lasting peace we need. Yes, we can find temporary peace by listening to calm music, eating comfort food, being with friends, and having the financial means to pay our bills, but it won’t last long.

It only takes one catastrophic event in our lives to destroy that kind of peace. Deep and lasting peace can only come from Jesus. The Bible is clear that we have peace with God through Jesus, not through the world. Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I don’t give you as the world gives. Let not your hearts be troubled and be not afraid” (John 14:27, NIV). Those words open up a real peace that lasts.

I personally deal with many of the changes mentioned above, and I’m sure many of you are too. But I can cling to all the peace that God assures us all. I pray that all of you, my family in reality and in the community, will have access to the same lasting peace offered by Christ.

The Apostle Paul expressed my feelings best: “May the Lord of peace Himself grant you peace at all times and in all respects. The Lord be with you all” (2 Thessalonians 3:16, NIV).
