Now that the first College Football Playoff rankings have been released, the table is set for the rest of the 2022 season. And it kicks off in earnest in Week 10 with two top-10 matchups with SEC opponents that will have direct implications for the league game and the play-off picture.
Number 1 Tennessee visits Number 3 Georgia in the SEC on CBS Game of the week. It’s the 25th regular-season game of all time between teams ranked No. 1 (Bulldogs) and No. 2 (Volunteers) in the AP Top 25, and it comes just weeks after Tennessee recorded its biggest win in decades. by handing over Alabama. his first loss of the season at Neyland Stadium. Now the Vols will try to prove their mettle against reigning National Champion Dawgs, who will face the toughest defense test all season for the nation’s top-ranked offense.
As if that wasn’t enough, No. 6 alabama no. 10 LSU in the Tigers’ favorite atmosphere: a Death Valley night game. The Crimson Tide can’t afford a second loss if they still hope for a playoff berth as the Bayou Bengals look for a signature year 1 win under Chip Kelly. A win for Bama would be a significant recovery from Tennessee’s loss and a major feather in the cap as it tries to close the SEC West and meet Georgia of Tennessee in the SEC Championship Game.
The SEC isn’t the only conference to be in the spotlight on Saturday. While the Big Ten powers No. 2 Ohio State (in Northwestern) and No. 5 Michigan (in Rutgers) are on the way as huge favorites, the top team in the ACC is also on the way, but in a much tougher match with No. 3 Clemson visits Notre Dame as a 3.5 point favorite. And while Kansas State No. 13 may have two losses more than No. 7 TCU (vs. Texas Tech), it nevertheless faces an important game against No. 24 Texas as the Wildcats hope to play in the Big 12 Championship Game.
By the time Saturday’s action ends, we’ll have a much clearer picture of what the second batch of CFP leaderboards will look like once Tuesday comes around. No. 1 Tennessee at No. 3 Georgia
Featured game | Georgia Bulldogs vs. Tennessee Volunteers
3.30 pm | CBS, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App — I’m going to take it easy and take Tennessee to win instantly. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take those points too, but this Tennessee attack is too good to be stopped even by a defense as talented and deep as Georgia’s. The volunteers will operate at warp speed, exposing the absence of linebacker Nolan Smith as they use quarterback Hendon Hooker and Jabari Small and Jaylen Wright run to the ground to set up the chunk plays over the top. Stetson Bennett won’t be able to keep up and Tennessee will once again take its biggest win in decades. Prediction: Tennessee +8.5 — Barrett Sallee
No. 6 Alabama at No. 10 LSU
Featured game | LSU Tigers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide
7 p.m. | ESPN, fuboTV (Try Free) — LSU is a top 10 team, according to the College Football Playoff Rankings, but I don’t think LSU is one of the top 10 teams in the country. Alabama has flaws and isn’t the same juggernaut dynamo we’re used to seeing, but it’s the better overall team in this matchup. Is it now so much better than LSU that Bama is going to win by two touchdowns? Which I’m not so sure about. The homey atmosphere in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, will be tough for Bryce Young and the Alabama attack, and I think the Crimson Tide will struggle enough to get away. I take the points. Prediction: LSU +13 — Tom Fornelli
No. 24 Texas at No. 13 Kansas State
Featured game | Kansas State Wildcats vs. Texas Longhorns
7 p.m. | FS1, fuboTV (Try It Free) — Texas has owned K-State for half a decade, but this is the best version of the Wildcats yet. Texas Quinn Ewers struggled on his first road start, and Kansas State will not be a friendly constraint for the young quarterback. The ‘Cats will hold the ball and restrict possessions to get away with an emphatic victory. Prediction: Kansas State +2.5 — Shehan Jeyarajah
No. 4 Clemson at Notre Dame
Featured game | Notre Dame fights Irish vs. Clemson Tigers
7:30 pm | NBC, fuboTV (Try Free) — The playbook for Notre Dame vs. Ohio was to lean on the defense and play a ball control game that allowed the Fighting Irish to stay as deep in the game as possible with the Buckeyes. Clemson also has a history under Dabo Swinney of leaning on his defense, playing field position and trying to limit errors in these big regular season clashes. The defensive battle should lead to many field goals and fewer points on the scoreboard. Prediction: Under 44 — Chip Patterson
