Story Links FULL LIST OF WUERFFEL TROPHY NOMINATED DURHAM – Duke Red Shirt Junior Defensive Gear DeWayne Carter has been nominated for the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy. The award is presented annually to the player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. The 6-3, 298-pound Pickerington, Ohio native, was an instrumental piece for the Blue Devils’ defense during his tenure. In 34 career games, he has put together 70 tackles, 17.5 tackles for losses, 8.0 sacks, seven caused fumbles, three fumbles, six quarterback pressures and four missteps. His career forced fumbles is tied for fourth in the history of the program, while his three fumbles and three caused fumbles this season put him in a tie for first and second place nationally, respectively.

In the community, Carter has volunteered his time working with Habitat for Humanity to build homes, participated in Duke’s Reading with the Blue Devils program, is a frequent visitor to Duke’s Children’s Hospital, and is a regular teacher at the KIPP Durham College Preparatory School and Durham IGNITE public school. In addition, he has grown into a team responsibility leader and serves as a freshman ACTION mentor, guiding first-year student athletes in adjusting to student life. Carter, a member of Duke’s United Black Athletes organization, is responsible for the group’s social media page and raising awareness about key dates, events and opportunities for the program. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning University of Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy honors college soccer players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world. Nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy are made by the sports information departments of the respective universities and closed on October 14. The semi-finalists for the award will be announced on November 1, and the finalists will be announced on November 29. The formal announcement of the 2022 recipient is scheduled to be made on December 8, and the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy will be presented on February 24, 2023, at the 54th All Sports Association Awards Banquet in Fort Walton Beach.
